Trio of freshmen will redshirt this season

Three of Green Bay’s four freshmen on the roster will take a redshirt year and sit out this season, head coach Linc Darner announced prior to the Phoenix 115-64 thrashing of Division III UW-Stout at the Kress Center on Saturday.

All three – Japannah Kellogg, Jiovanni Miles, and Lucas Stieber – will take the year to build strength and get acclimated to Darner’s up-tempo RP40 system and then will have four seasons of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2020/2021 season.

Kellogg impressed on the glass at the Green vs White Scrimmage last month using his length and athleticism to grab several offensive rebounds leading to extra possessions for his team. He was exposed a bit defensively, however, especially in the paint, and the year off to build strength should do wonders for the 6’6” forward from Ames, Iowa for next season.

Miles and Stieber joined the program as walk-ons and likely would’ve been behind several upperclassmen in the guard rotation including JayQuan McCloud, Kam Hankerson, PJ Pipes, and Hunter Crist. There should be a few more minutes available for both with McCloud and Hankerson graduating after this season.

It is possible that any of the three players could burn the redshirt status and play meaningful minutes this season should any injury, suspension, or transfer issues arise.  But if not the lone freshman on Green Bay’s active roster will be the reigning Horizon League Freshman of the Week, Amari Davis.
