Khalil Small had a big night Thursday night at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland.
The 6’2” senior scored a career high 30 points in Green Bay’s 80-79 loss at Cleveland State. But more impressively, he became the latest Phoenix player to join the 1,000 point club when he converted a layup while getting fouled in the first half.
He is the 19th player in Green Bay’s Division I history to reach the 1,000 career points mark according to Sports-Reference.com. He is the fifth Phoenix player recruited by Brian Wardle to reach the mark joining Kiefer Sykes, Alec Brown, Carrington Love, and Jordan Fouse.
Small appeared in 20 games as a freshman in Wardle’s final season in Titletown and scored just 43 points. He decided to stay at UW-Green Bay and has been a solid fit in Linc Darner’s system, scoring 10.2 points per game as a sophomore during the Phoenix NCAA Tournament season of 2016.
His scoring averaged was basically the same last season but he had a disappointing season shooting the ball, making just 19 three pointers on 82 attempts last season (23.2%).
Despite Green Bay’s struggles as a team this season, Small is enjoying an offensive resurgence.
He ranks 5th in the Horizon League in scoring at 16.8 points per game and has drastically improved his three point shot, making them at a 45.3% clip so far this season.
Small is the 8th active player in the Horizon League to have scored 1,000 points, joining Youngstown State’s Cameron Morse (1628), Oakland’s Jalen Hayes (1487) and Martez Walker (1165), Wright State’s Grant Benzinger (1167), Northern Kentucky’s Drew McDonald (1126), Detroit Mercy’s Jaleel Hogan (1062), and UIC’s Dikembe Dixson (1016).
